THE
GREEN CENTRE
BANDS REVIEW
|
The
Green Centre in Caldmore Walsall celebrated the opening of its
new arts project for the benefit of the local community by staging
a band's night.
Sponsored
by: Caldmore Area Housing Association
Supported by: Caldmore Local Committee, Walsall SRB and Community
Arts
In Partnership with: Voluntary Groups and Organisations based
in Walsall
The
event was organised by our good friend Fitz from the College in
co-operation with Nazir Ahmed, Elaine Le Montais, and many others
connected with the project.
The
evening rightly belonged to all the participating bands who willingly
gave up their time to perform, for no fees, in order to help promote
the venue. This short review is compiled to document the event
and also serves to acknowledge and thank all those people who
helped make the night a resounding success. It is not a critique!
A special thank you from me to Naz for taking the photos....cheers.
The
night was to feature some bands from the College plus three local
gigging bands who, between them have played the regional circuits
and are continually gaining in popularity. These bands were Clifton,
Acacia and Rise. I'm waiting for information on the other bands
so I'm unable to give details of their portfolio, so meanwhile
I will crack on before the Xmas deadline and will add any details
later.

The
college bands hit the stage one after the other with good all
round performances each one showing off their characteristic styles.
The audience numbered approximately eighty people and were clearly
up for a good time. They were very enthusiastic and gave each
band, in turn, a warm and generous handclapping. It was a pleasure
to be entertained by these artistes and they were certainly having
a great time too.
Acacia
followed
next and hit the stage looking to continue and build on the buzz
created by their peers. This band play a mean style of rocky pop
all of which is their own material from the pen of lead vocalist/guitarist,
Graham Delaney of the 'Delaney Brothers' fame. It was noticeable
that they had been working on their act during rehearsals as they
began their first number 'Don't Leave Me Alone Tonight'. A tight,
rocky number with a catchy hook and a verse with a vocal line
that Graham sings with a slight stutter - reminscent of The Who's
'My Generation'. 'Always Tell Me' is a strong drum and bass driven
track off their new EP, simply called 'Acacia'. Other tracks followed
and after a 20 minute set they left the stage leaving an excited
audience, who were clearly appreciative. As their new manager
I was pleased with their overall performance which was tight and
energetic. A special note for young Gary who played with extra
vigour! Well done. A curry night on the offering lads?!

Rise
were up next to the cheer of their fans. They presented us with
their own raucous style of punk rock and delivered a fine set.
They are a band who are playing regularly on the local circuit
and are at The Varsity on Friday 21st December...well worth watching.
I enjoy seeing this band as they are quite energetic and certainly
enjoy themselves on stage. Andy may I have a copy of your new
CD.
Rise - Rob, Lee, Ben, Chris, Andy
Clifton
were the final band of the night, having recently won a local
competition at the Robin Club. As with the other bands they are
a youthful and energetic band on stage and, aim to please their
fans. Tonight was no exception and despite heavy colds, sore throats,
inflammed vocal cords and god knows what they produced a very
pleasing set. In fact, many musicians were suffering from the
lurgi...!!! Many thanks to Clifton and their guests.

A
good nights entertainment from everyone and let's hope that
The Green Centre will be successful
in achieving its aims to provide a service to the local community.
